Children who spend time watching R-rated movies more probably to start smoking

According to latest study by Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology researchers, children who are permitted to watch mature (R-rated) movies have a higher inclination to start smoking.

During almost 3.5 years of research, more than 1,400 sixth-grade students in Virginia were interviewed 11 times about a range of subjects, including the number of smokers in their family, means of getting and buying cigarettes, and how often their parents permitted them to watch R-rated movies or videos.

Children who spent time watching these adult movies were more likely to think that it's simple to obtain cigarettes, and namely this attitude had been correlated to smoking in previous studies made by various health organizations. Scientists added that they're not confident whether this broadminded permissive parental relation to letting their kids watch adult movies or indirect advertising of smoking and influence on young minds in such movies was to blame for the kids' choice of whether to smoke or not.

The researchers found that parental permissive attitude to watch R-rated movies was one of the heaviest foreshadows of children’ understanding that cigarettes were available, about as strong as having friends who were themselves smokers. In addition, in the situation when children were permitted to watch mature movies, nonsmokers were almost two times as likely and smokers were almost three times as likely to admit it would not be difficult for them to obtain cigarettes.

"Parents need to be mindful about the movies their children watch for a variety of reasons. This study points out one more reason for not allowing children to watch movies that are not appropriate for their age," study co-author Joseph DiFranza of the University of Virginia Medical School mentioned.
