Consumption of Smokeless Tobacco among Teens Rises

According to a recently-published report the consumption of smokeless tobacco among high school students has raised to a new level this year.

The report made up by the University of Minnesota scientists showed that 8.4 percent of high school students consumed such products within one month. That is the highest percentage within the decade. In 2006 the rate was at its decade low with 6.1 percent in 2006 and raised only 0.4 percent during the following two years.

Moreover, the level of consumption among middle school students also went up 0.2 percent from 3.5% last year to 3.7 in 2009. In contrast, it was reported that the rate of cigarette-smokers among high school students went down slightly, from 20.4 percent registered last year to 20.1 percent.

This year’s report, marking its 35th edition, surveyed more than 46,000 students of 389 schools across Minnesota. The report also found that consumption of marijuana is on the rise among U.S. adolescents, while tobacco use and alcohol drinking dropped. The report is revealed on the heels of the Centers for Disease Control annual study, published in November which also demonstrated that the popularity of marijuana use among teenagers is growing.

The majority of scientists and experts admitted that it is too early to comment on whether the set of factors including the introduction of innovative smoke-free tobacco items, mainly by Reynolds American and its subsidiaries and the rigorous promotion drives impacted on the rise in the popularity of smokeless tobacco among younger Americans.

However, the report will certainly trigger heated debates among anti-tobacco organizations that had previously divided into two parties. One party claims smokeless products represent a starting point for adolescents that will result in taking up cigarettes. The other party backs the products, saying they can help in cutting the rates of cigarette smokers and are not as hazardous as cigarettes.

Tobacco-Free Kids chairman Matthew Myers stated that smokeless products definitely have become a temptation for minors, since they are easy to hide, offered in many flavor varieties, come in trendy packages and available under the names of popular brands. But, sincere supporters of the smokeless products, like director of SmokeFree Minnesota Robert Cook called them reduced-risk substitutes of cigarettes.

He said that it seems that both younger and adult tobacco lovers are trying to replace cigarettes with smokeless tobacco, taking into consideration that smokeless tobacco is a hundred times less harmful than cigarettes. He added that it is a small victory for public health to see that smoking rate among teenagers has dropped, no matter how slightly.

David Howard, Reynolds American Senior Communications manager stated that the primary principle of the company is to avoid encouraging teenagers to take up tobacco. He added that the company’s marketing strategy is only aimed at adult smokers.

All of our marketing communications are designed for, and communicate with, adult tobacco consumers.” That is partially due to the rise in the nationwide adult smoking rates that went up from 19.7 percent two years ago to 21 percent this year.
