Smokers are infuriated about pricesDespite the federal cigarette tax increase was partly an effort to reduce the number of smokers across the country and prevent young people from trying cigarettes, many smokers are raging with anger and claim to find other means of obtaining cigarettes. Moreover, while many smokers admit that they would definitely give up or at least reduce the number of cigarettes smoked each day, others stand firm on their decision to keep smoking despite all the obstacles caused by government and health advocates. On a sunny Thursday morning, Andy Carpenter was working at Tobacco Shop located in Bentonville. He admitted that he was used to serving many customers, but their number dropped significantly when the tax increase entered into force. He said regular customers have been embarrassed with the new price, because they heard about tax increase but did not know that it would be so large. A woman that refused to be named since she has been working in primary school and, thus, has to hide her habit in order to save her job, however decided to express her opinion about the unfair tax. She confessed she had even written to Philip Morris advising them to bring a lawsuit against the government for the illegal tax increase. “It appears to me that they want to smokers exorcise smokers,” she complained. Another smoker, Charlie Mitchell added that the tax increase was absolute nonsense, underlying that smokers should not pay for others’ children health. He said he has two children and he used to work overtime in order to pay for their insurance, and he has no idea why he should pay now as well. Mitchell also said he switched from cigarettes to roll-your-own tobacco in order to save money. However, Tobacco Shop manager told us that price of a pack of rolling tobacco jumped from $15.39 to $35.49, making it not as cheap as many smokers imagine. Andy Carpenter mentioned that he even saw one customer took the pack of roll-your-own tobacco then looked at the price and cast angrily the pack to its place. Arkansas lawmakers approved the increase of state cigarette tax in order to collect revenue to finance trauma center in the state. However, many smokers were simply frustrated to hear that the trauma center, for which they would pay, would not be a building but a system, comprising a communication network among state hospitals in order to react faster to sever injuries and diseases. Arkansas Health Department spokesman explained that the trauma center was the name of the system that would help to keep specialized doctors in the nearest proximity to the hospital in order to give injured or sick person necessary help as soon as possible. According to the spokesman, federal government is ready to bear all the responsibility, criticism and blames for the tax increase, however they are confident that they would help people to give up smoking and people would soon be thankful. Christina Swan came to tobacco shop to buy a carton of Marlboro Lights. She admitted she has been a smoker since she was 14 and after 30 years of smoking she has no plans of giving up her habit. She stated that throughout the nation drunk drivers kill thousands innocent people every day; however the government has no plans of increasing alcohol taxes as well. “Everything they can do, is keep saying they did it for our sake, but they forget to ask us, smokers if we need it,” Swan fumed. At the same time Ms. Swan admitted that she considered hitting the road and going to neighbor states to stock up for cigarettes, because she wanted to harm the state government plans the same as they hurt her every day life. Travis Fox of Fayetteville shared the same opinion, stating that he would go to Missouri and buy cigarettes there. However, smokers’ plans of hitting the road are in jeopardy as the state lawmakers are debating over a bill that would make stocking up on cigarettes out of the state a first class felony. |
