Rock Hill restaurants become smokeless this week

The ban was heavily criticized by local business owners; including Lynn Stewart, the owner of Red's Grill – the oldest restaurant in Rock Hill that celebrated its 60th anniversary last year.

The change is a great shock for Red's, since the overwhelming majority of regular customers are smokers. It means that there would be no more usual habits: no more ashtrays and cigarettes smoke, no more celebrations or quarrels over football, basketball or racing event near a table full with cigarette butts in ashtrays, beer or coffee. Smoking at all eating and drinking businesses and other public buildings situated in Rock Hill is prohibited beginning with Friday after the corresponding by-law as approved by local authorities.

That was not a major surprise for Rock Hill residents since healthy habits urged to become a new fashionable trend for County Council lawmakers. That is a victory for those health-crazed fat cats who drink spring water from small bottles, which are of the same price as beer or even gasoline, judging by the gallon cost and eat organic strawberry jam with organic bread.

And it remains for us who prefer drinking unhealthy beer, eating unhealthy French-fries and smoke unhealthy cigarettes, to go outside for every smoke no matter what weather is outside.

All smokers are definitely aware that smoking is hazardous for health, awfully smelling and simply unfashionable habit. However, on the threshold of indoor smoking ban entering into force, Red's Grill was packed with people smoking, eating their cheeseburgers and drinking beer. It was a traditional breakfast rush hour, smoky, loud, and nasty; with waitresses tearing around with full trays and cookers frying and boiling various meals. Almost every customer was smoking.

Chris Morrison was puffing in his motorized wheelchair. He admitted that he has been hooked on cigarettes for more than a half of century, lighting up for the first time when he was 10. Being now 72, Morrison stated that he seemed discriminated by the ban, since he would have to go outside from Red’s where he usually spends up to 4 hours each day to have a smoke.

At the neighboring table there were other smoking customers who called the ban stupid and exorcising. The exorcism of smokers began when scientists confirmed that exposure to secondhand smoke was almost as unhealthy as smoking yourself. Bart Barker, regular customer and a nonsmoker admitted that he is not against smokers alongside him. However, folks that were sitting at the table next to the Barker’s agreed in opinion that the banning indoor smoking in public places was a rather wise decision from local authorities.

Smoking is hazardous for health of the people who smoke, but why should we, nonsmokers suffer too,” claimed one of those guys.

There is one curious issue about the latter ban – it would be self-enforced. There would be no police officers, tracking restaurants and bars and capturing lawbreakers.

Instead, the authorities will rely on your neighboring squealers tipping off the police. Catch somebody smoking in prohibited place, call a special department in the Council and handle that person a warning. With number of complaints on the same person rising, the investigation would be initiated and the fine would be imposed.

John Smith, who works at Red's during the last 10 years, said that almost all customers who come in this sanctuary of smoke and French-fries know how smoky the place is and in case they do not want to be exposed to it they simply go elsewhere.
