Students prepare for new rules as FAU bans smoking on campus

Visiting the principal library of Florida Atlantic University you would be surprised seeing countless cigarette butts scattered everywhere. Although there are two ashtrays located just several steps away from the entrance, students keep throwing the butts away anywhere they want.

The litter is one of the main causes why educational facilities across America are approving ordinances to become smoke-free. According to the FAU spokesperson, the university would ban tobacco products completely starting on July,1st 2010. The University’s authorities state that smoking will be banned within 100 feet from all educational facilities in September, whereas smoking-on campus will be banned next summer.

A spring survey of current FAU students showed that more than 75 percent of students back restricting smoking to specially designated zones across the campus. Prohibiting puffing completely on FAU's campus received 65 percent supporters.

Nowadays, FAU smokers frequently light up near facilities’ entrances, since the ashtrays are situated there. Non-smoking students complain that they are exposed to dangerous second-hand smoke each time they enter or exit the buildings because of a crowd of smokers.

FAU spokesperson said that they plan to launch a separate area, which would be located several feet away from facilities, and place there chairs and tables, in order to accommodate students better, since those non-smoking students should not be exposed to second hand smoke. The university officials have already launched several campaigns asking smokers to puff several feet away from the buildings.

Gainesville-based University of Florida would become the first public university to implement a comprehensive campuswide smoking ban, which would take effect next year. According to Universtiy of Florida officials, the university plans to become not just smoke-free, but tobacco-free, meaning that it would as well ban snuff, roll-your-own tobacco and even hookah.

University of Florida spokesman Steven Hollander said that they would remove all the ashtrays from campus, and help smoking students get rid of the habit by launching several awareness educational programs. He also stated that they do not plan enforcing the ordinance and hope that social factors like peer pressure would serve as enforcement for the smoking ban.

Orlando said no one will get a citation if caught smoking on campus. School officials are hoping peer pressure will be enough to enforce the rules. He added that they would not impose fines or tickets on individuals caught on smoking in prohibited places. However, not everybody is happy hearing the news of smoking ban.

Celeste Ezell, a sophomore from UF Fisher School of Accounting said although she understands why smoking should be banned inside the buildings, she thinks that it shouldn’t be passed to outside as well.
