Ban smoking if young persons are in the car

Irish Cancer Society has said the smoking prohibition should be reached to drivers to save the health of child passengers. In the first week of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the society is calling for a focused campaign to cut down the quantity of teenagers and children affected by smoking. A spokeswoman for the society says: “We need to increase the awareness of second-hand smoking. We could look at extending the ban to smoking in cars where children are in the car.”

She says: “Smokers continue to light up in front of their child passengers, while workers are protected against second-hand smoking by law. Cigarettes are also far too accessible to teenagers, since many have a high-disposable income and can afford to buy them, according to the society. This year the price was raised by 50c whereas we had called for ?2 on a pack of 20. The price has to be out of reach for the consumer, and we would like to see the raising of taxes on cigarettes. The tax add-on from last month’s Budget is not enough to curb the number of young people taking up smoking. We still feel that cigarettes are affordable, and unless there is a significant price increase, young people will still be able to buy cigarettes.”

As to the Office of Tobacco Control, some 16pc of 12 to 17 year-olds smoke, even though it is illegal for them to be sold tobacco. The spokeswoman added: “We weren’t happy with 50 cent. It’s not a significant price increase and we would see it as a lost opportunity. We also want to ensure that current smoke-free environments are enforced. There’s been an increase in the prevalence of smoking with 29pc of the adult population smoking every day. By the end of 2009, there will be pictorial warnings on cigarette packs, and on July 1, 2009, discount cigarette advertising displays will be out of sight at the point of sale. We’ll look forward to the graphic warning. It’s easy to do and it’s just been introduced in the UK.”

The society says that while the smoking prohibition has been successful in reducing the incidences of passive smoking, it is not a good idea to prohibit smoking completely. The spokeswoman says: “It’s not realistic to consider it. The way forward is to look at why young people are smoking and are a target to tobacco companies. During November, the society will be highlighting the importance of prevention of lung cancer which is the highest killer of all the cancers in Ireland. Early detection is very important. The earlier you get checked out the better the outcome.”

Some 6,000 people die every year from tobacco-related diseases, and 30pc of all cancers are caused by smoking.
