Books and cigarettes have design battleLast summer, in UK a small British publisher and Design Company Tank was published a range of short stories books looked like cigarettes. At that time, this idea seems to be very interesting and funny. Abridged works and short stories by Kafka and Conrad, Tolstoy and Kipling, Hemingway and Stevenson looked like packs for 20 cigarettes on line. Cigarettes-books were distributed through bookshops and the Design Museum. Design press appreciated this idea and after ban launching those books became trendy Christmas present. The fairy story about those books ended when British American Tobacco Company accused the design company of negative influence on the health of its Lucky Strike brand. As company said, the design and coloring of the Hemingway's The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Undefeated book resembles the Lucky Strike pack. The London law firm that represents BAT, said that shape, white and red coloring and design of the book is a direct allusion to Lucky Strike pack. Law firm added that this packing could make people to believe that BAT sponsored or contributed to edition of this book as a hidden way to promote its cigs and this ”can dilute the goodwill in the Lucky Strike brand”. A BAT spokeswoman said that now in UK any form of tobacco advertising is banned and tobacco products produced by the company are for adults only. She added that bringing out cigarette- books can negative influence young people. These affirmations shocked the book-producers. As Masoud Golsorkhi said, co-founder and creative director of Tank, he had been toying with the idea of using the cigarette packs for some time. When they heard about the smoking ban it seemed like it was now or never. ”I thought that producing a book that was small enough to be easily carried everywhere with you, like a packet of cigarettes, could be a good alternative - and the packaging made it fun.” Golsorkhi told that the initial intention was far from what BAT claims. He said that this interesting design could encourage many to read them. “All my professional life has been about the image, but without words thinking isn't possible and it saddens me to be working with people in their 20s who are smart but profess to having never read a single book,” said Golsorkhi. Lawyers of Tank Books explained to BAT representatives that there are a lot of cigarettes that have similar coloring and motifs as Lucky Strike has and that public is aware of to recognize a pack of cigs and a Hemingway novel. BAT spokeswoman said that that BAT always tried to resolve disputes amicably and talks were continuing. |
