Beijing resists to banThe Chinese government has decided to make the country smoke-free till the Olympic Game 2008. In the period between August 8 - 24, 2008, Beijing will become the Center of the most important international event in sport. The Chinese government worries about their image in foreign’ eyes that’s why restrictions on public smoking continue to be discussed and new and more ordinances are implemented. For example, lightening up tobacco products is banned in cabs, schools, government offices and hospitals. It is planed to ban smoking in restaurants, but it is expected a great resistance from the side of smokers. In the first smoke-free restaurant waitresses were trained to discourage people from smoking, but they met stubborn opposition. This situation worries the government about the success and effectiveness of the ban. Though, government is incurably optimistic and recently Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has guaranteed smoke-free Olympics. It has been contacted almost 30,000 Beijing restaurants that were asked to respect the restriction concerning the inside smoking. |
