Survey shows: children buy cigarettes from ice cream vansIt is unbelievable, but as study proved it happens. Hard to imagine what future will have our children who can buy tobacco products from ice cream vans. This must alert not only state authorities, but parents too. According to a recently done survey, in Wigan schoolchildren are buying cigarettes from ice cream vans. It was questioned about 950 pupils at six high schools across the borough. Results were shocking. As survey shows around a quarter of all the 14 to 17-year-olds surveyed admitted they smoked. Smokers of 14 and 15 years old often used to buy cigarettes at such illegitimate sources as from ice cream vans, car boot sales or neighbors. Also, children say that they have cigarettes from elder brother or sisters. Survey proves that 68% of 14-17 year old smokers in Wigan have bought imported cheap cigarettes online. It also was detected that smokers drink more frequently than nonsmokers. Primary objective of the survey was to identify where and how children obtain alcohol and tobacco products. Results proved by survey were reported to members of the council's community protection committee. Some extracts from report are: “Half of teenagers who are currently smoking will die from diseases caused by tobacco if they continue to smoke. “Someone who starts smoking at 15 is three times likely to die from cancer due to smoking than someone who starts in their mid 20s. “Evidence suggests that where people think they are buying imported or duty free cigarettes that they are often buying counterfeit cigarettes which can impose an even greater health risk. “We will liaise with local schools to make pupils aware of the added dangers of purchasing cigarettes from illegitimate sources and we will actively target the identified sources of these products.” This statistic makes authorities to introduce more strict control for sellers of tobacco products along with checking up of stores to see where the child is able to buy cigarettes from various shops. |
