Driver was fined for smoking

In UK a driver was fined for smoking in his working van. Most acute is that in his van another man who didn’t smoke was present.

This is a very acute accusation for UK, because it is prohibited by law to smoke at workplaces and work vehicles and in places where nonsmokers are. The fines that differ in amount according to infringement have been fixed.

The name of the driver is unknown. It is known that in his car 2 no-smoking signs on the windscreen were displayed and a passenger was alongside him. Now, the driver ought to pay a total fine of 125Pounds – 50Pounds for smoking and 75Pounds for littering.

“The enforcement officers from our public health and protection department have spent six months tirelessly encouraging compliance through proactive contact with businesses, the provision of timely advice and support and significant campaigns to raise public awareness. Now that the requirements of the ban and the implications of littering are widely known and understood, there can be no excuse, said RCT council cabinet member Clayton Willis.

“Infringements of the smoking ban or littering in the county borough will not be tolerated and we will do all in our power to make RCT a cleaner and healthier place to live, work and visit.”

Simon Clark, of pro-smoking group Forest (Freedom Organisation for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco), called this case “ridiculous”. He said that the idea that somebody couldn’t have a quiet smoke in his vehicle and was being watched by enforcement officers simply for having a fag showed just how extreme the law is.

Deborah Arnott, of Action on Smoking and Health (Ash), said that the driver had clearly broken the law and the Highway Code now points out it isn’t very safe to drive and smoke. Action of that kind wasn’t taken easily. Also she added: “Second-hand smoking is extremely dangerous. The concentration of smoke in cars is significantly higher than in a large open workplace.”
