Illinois State University advocates the smoke-free policyIllinois State University increases the list of the smoke-free college campuses. Only in USA, there are already 60 college campuses that promote anti-smoking policy in their campuses. Illinois State University has already prohibited lighting up indoors in residential housing and student facilities. Along with celebrations of the New Year 2008 holiday, in campus will also be celebrated a new smoking policy that will launch in Illinois state on January 1. “People will not be allowed to smoke within 15 feet of entryways into buildings, windows that open, and air intakes to the building,” J. Crabill, director of Environmental Health and Safety, said. As usual, this improvement has supporters and opponents. The opponents consider that this law will cause some inconveniences for them. ”In the winter time these corridor things near the doors help keep out the cold, but now we will have to move,” Kristina Liesman, a freshman English major and smoker said. Though, the ISU authorities haven’t discussed the project to make ISU a total smoke-free campus. ”There have been some very informal discussions, but none with any substance to it,” Crabill said. However, as Crabill said, the Environmental Health and Safety would be contacted if a student or a student organization wants to make ISU to be a smoke-free campus. ”We have a University Health Education Council, and there is a student who represents the students on the council,” Crabill said. There are opinions that this restriction will encourage and help students who practice this habit to quit. Andrew McByrd, a freshman mass communication major, sustained the idea to make ISU smoke-free, as this will be good for environment and there will be less pollution in the air from smoking and of course no cigarette butts that now are thrown everywhere. “We want our campus to look nice, orderly and neat,” Crabill said. |
