Another warning for storesIn Blackpool, traders were warned to stop the sale of tobacco products to underage children, as this can seriously damage their health. The sellers were cautioned by Trading Standards officers because according to the latest test, there are stores that continue to sell cigarettes to children without asking their age. The experiment was very innocent and unsophisticated. Children, armed with a hidden camera and microphone, have to visit a certain store or bar and buy cigarettes. As the officers said, the results shocked the whole team. Jane Roberts, the head of tobacco control at Blackpool Primary Care Trust, said: “It's so shocking. I’m appalled. “You wouldn't expect to get 100 per cent sales and it does mean we will have to work closer with Trading Standards so people are aware that it will not be tolerated. Also, she added, “I find it astonishing anybody would want to sell cigarettes to young people. Evidence shows the younger people start the later they stop and the less mature they are the greater the effect it has on their health.” The law about rising the age from 16 to 18 was launched on October1, but the result of the experiment proved that this law is ignored by some traders. Abby Simms, 15, from Marton has also participated at the experiment. Abby said that the warnings were placed even in the store, that it is prohibited to sell cigarettes to children who are not 18years old; he bought discount cigarettes without being interrogated about his age. “There were signs saying it was illegal to sell cigarettes to under 18s but they didn't ask my age, “ said Abby. Head of Trading Standards, Tim Coglan, accepted that the results are very pessimistic. He understands that it is difficult for retailers to monitor vending machines, but the results proved the fact that namely this ignorance, made possible for children to buy cigarettes without any interdictions. Tim Coglan has addressed to all retailers and traders to be more conscientious and interested in this issue, along with that of alcohol and to refuse the selling of tobacco products and alcoholic drinks to children without asking for proof that will confirm their age (as of his/her age, as ID card, or passport or driving license to ensure the person is of the right age). Mr Coglan added: “It is incumbent upon retailers to ask for the proof of age card, or passport or driving licence to ensure the person is of the right age.” |
