Ohio will celebrate Tobacco Festival

Every year, Ohio State observes a wonderful celebration “Tobacco Festival”. At the last years initiators presented a marvelous open-air parade, antique car’s show, outdoor flea market, crafts and commercial exhibits show plus many delicious food booths this day. Also superb tobacco show, tobacco worm race, talents show, arm wrestling competition, corn hole tournament, carnival rides were demonstrated. And of course the most brilliant show is queen's pageant. This is a great gala for Ohio.

This year it will be the 26th “Tobacco festival” that will go under the theme “Tobacco: A New Beginning.” The event opening 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 and will last through the weekend until Sunday 4 p.m.

This year some changes are introduced. The location of some events is moved into Front and Lower Cherry streets. Relocation occurs because the Farmer's Tobacco Warehouse is no longer available.

Some of the events, exhibits and shows including the flea market, the craft show, commercial exhibits, food booths, the baking contest, the tobacco spitting contest, the cigar and pipe smoking contest and the frog jumping contest are planned to be held in Front Street .

Behind Lower Cherry Street the spot for rides and games will be marked.

The other events remain in-loco. Softball tournament takes place on the field near the elementary school in Ripley. The bed race, the garden obstacle course, and the antique car and bike show take place in Main Street.

A corn hole tournament is scheduled in 19 Main Street, at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 27.

Locations of some events are yet to be announced.

Despite the relocation of certain events and exhibits, Applegate felt that the Tobacco Festival will be as successful as it was in the previous years.

Tobacco Festival President Greg Applegate hopes 2007 festival will have the same success as the previous ones. “From the phone calls I've received so far, I expect as a good turnout as we saw in the past,” said Applegate. “But a lot of it depends on the weather.”

“We felt it was better to move some activities downtown this year because we don't have access to one of the warehouses, but we do have access to the OK Warehouse, where a lot of events will still be held,” Applegate added.

It will be offered a free parking for visitors of festival in the Ripley-Union-Lewis-Huntington High School parking lot.

Committee is looking for qualified young ladies to represent the Ohio Tobacco Festival for the coming year. Queen’s pageant is one of most important personage of the festival. The Queen will travel through Ohio as a representative of tobacco heritage in southern Ohio and will have the opportunity to present Ohio Tobacco Festival at other events throughout the state.
