Nairobi cabinet minister said: Don't smoke if you cannot pay fine

The implementation of a new tax for public smoking begins with the statement “If you cannot afford Sh2, 000 do not smoke in Nairobi”. Cabinet minister confirmed that last week as a preventive measure for all Nairobi cigarette users.

Local Government increased the tax for lightening up again after a veto on tobacco usage in public places was introduced.

Nairobi, also known as the “Green City in the Sun” is the capital and the largest city in Kenya. It is also the most populous city in East Africa that numbers approximately 3 or 4 million citizens. It is also an imminent financial, political and cultural center.

It was officially confirmed that the court tax equal to Sh 2,000 will be applied for every smoker who wouldn’t respect the innovation.

Also, it was presented a list of local places where tobacco usage is allowed. It ought to reduce nationally law breaking and facilitate a successful implementation of the new restriction.

Nairobi City Council designated smoking zones in the central business district where lightening is free, legal and without any restrictions.

The Mayor of Nairobi, Mr Dick Wathika, established an area in front of the General Post Office in the Koinange Street. As it was sustained by the mayor, it is planned to have assistance from the part of tobacco producers in process of sheltering the smoking areas, so that smokers can feel there comfortable even if it is raining.

The other smoking places named by the mayor include Jevanjee Gardens and Uhuru Park etc.
