Coronas’ fight for underage tobacco smoking


Corona officials claimed a major anti-tobacco strategy focused to children that used to buy cigarettes from their local stores. This is very sad to detect, but this is it.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a Corona public school that “city stores complied in record numbers with a law prohibiting the sale of cigarettes to minors, contributing to an overall decline in tobacco use in the five boroughs.”

About anti-smoking campaign was announced on April 11 at Leonardo Da Vinci IS 61, at 98-50 50th Ave. in Corona by national anti-tobacco activist Jeffrey Wigand. At this meeting he had presented the damage that can result the smoking of a tobacco products, namely by minors.

Bloomberg said that this is part of big effort what resulted with 29,000 fewer young people smoking than 10 years ago. Same, he purposed raising with additional 50 cents for a pack of online cigarette.

This anti-usage of tobacco children by minors was initiated as result of high number of smoking people that continue to increase. As it was estimated by officials, one person from six is smoker in the Corona area.

Law related to trading of tobacco products that was introduced in Corona was permission of asking of personal ID if anyone who looks younger than 25.

New regulation had involved public into its realization, and in special minors. In Corona there are around 11,000 licensed tobacco retailers. Jonathan Mintz city’ Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner initiated employment of about 30 undercover children through the Youth Tobacco Enforcement and Prevention Program to make purchases in stores. As he stated the participating teenagers are at age 15 to 17 and are from simply schools, community groups and elected officials. They go together with an agency inspector during the buys, paid $7.25 per hour plus Metro Cards and asked to pledge not to smoke.

Also, Jonathan Mintz affirmed: “The city conducted about 16,300 undercover inspections last year and has carried out 11,000 so far in 2007”.
